I'm sure this was all done statistically, and I imagine that those people buying books on Kalman filters are likely to also be buying Vonnegut books.

It's the other direction (presumably the one they would create the connection with) that makes less sense.

At first I thought that the recommendation was really because I had bought some Kalman-filter-related book from Amazon in the past... but I don't appear to have ever bought such a book.

New theory: Amazon bought some other marketing information, e.g., they found my name on a list of attendees at a control conference, leading them to believe I might buy a book on Kalman filters. However, the email template is based on the premise that all recommendations are because of something you bought at Amazon.

If it was all done statistically, then Amazon needs to read up on some of the statistics books.

The kalman filtering stuff is too advanced for them. They need to start with correlation vs. causation.
